Welcome to our website!
What one member of the audience said about our summer 2017 concert: “…the choir sang so beautifully – the ensemble was glorious and musicality shone out… …I loved it. Not easy to pull off this type of programme but the choir sustained it superbly…”. For further details see the concert report on our Events page.
Please take a look around! We hope you'll find enough here for you to
get a feel for who we are and what we do. On our
events page we have some photos, so that
you can get some idea of what we look like!
The Holmbury St Mary Choral Society is an amateur choir drawing its
membership from the region of the Surrey Hills (an area of outstanding natural
beauty near Dorking and Guildford to the south-west of London) and outlying
towns and villages.
The choir usually undertakes at least three concert programmes a year: a
Christmas Concert, the Leith Hill Musical Festival competition and concert, and
a summer concert. We managed four in 2006 and five in 2007, but these were exceptional.
The choirs ethos is centred on a good-humoured quest for musical
excellence. We have enjoyed considerable success in our division of the Leith
Hill Festival over several years, winning our Division every year since 2008.
Much of the credit for our success is due to our conductor,
Amy Bebbington, who
started working with us in September 2007, ably assisted by our regular accompanist,
Helen Wharmby. For further details of our successes
see the events page.
Holmbury St Mary Choir welcomes new members; the main requirement being
that you enjoy choral singing. There are no auditions, though some previous
experience is recommended, as is a willingness to work hard! Rehearsals are
held in Abinger Hammer (just off the A25) on Thursdays, broadly in alignment
with the school terms. For more information please contact our
Secretary or use our
web enquiry form.
